Journal 03: America Tony Hoaglands poem America uses item nouns and metaphors to advertise readers that America is too obsessed with material objects and self-satisfaction. Hoagland uses these nouns and metaphors to peel lawfulness from the naked eye, specific diction is also utilize in combination with these metaphors to expose corruption in Ameri usher out society. The narrator reverts to flashback, when he remembers a dream he has where he stabs his overprotect, and his initiate [gasps], Thank beau ideal those Ben Franklins were / clog up up my heart / And so I slip away happily, / Freed from that which kept me from my liberty. The author uses the Ben Franklins, which is a symbol for funds, to grant almost as a heart attack or rather the junk that clogs ones arteries. By having the father feel relieved and happy that he has been stabbed, it shows how much the money was keeping him from living a happy life. He secureness feels that the money kept him from feeling free. This tells me that money sometimes does not bring happiness, but in fact brings the opposite.
